Weight Loss Tips for Thyroid Patients

New Year’s Resolutions have become something that people jokingly make or make knowing that they won’t actually stick to them. Call me old school, but I believe you can stick to a New Year’s Resolution if you try. The most common one everyone tries to stick to is losing weight. Thyroid dysfunction makes that goal a lot harder, but if that is what your desire is this year, check out the following tips!

1. Thyroid Optimization

The first step in helping you lose weight when you have a thyroid problem is addressing the thyroid problem because when the thyroid is in a hypo state it causes the metabolism to slow down making it nearly impossible to lose weight. Look for a doctor that is willing to run the appropriate labs to diagnose you (not just the TSH) and who is willing to prescribe the appropriate medication (not just T4 or Synthroid).

2. Cut the Grains

No one wants to hear that! Especially if you are like me and love pasta, bagels, and pizza (sorry if I’m making you hungry), but unfortunately those tasty foods can strain the digestive system and cause inflammation. This not only leads to discomfort, but also a bigger number on the scale.

3. Walk

Or do some sort of exercise. I know this too can be difficult when your thyroid is causing major fatigue and all you want to do is sleep, but a little bit of movement is better than none. Exercising will help boost your metabolism, raise your resting metabolism, and burn calories.

4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Similar to exercising, hydration can help boost the metabolism. When your body becomes dehydrated cellular functions begin to slow down and proper hydration is necessary to keeping your metabolism going. In addition to helping the metabolism, proper water intake helps the body get rid of toxins.

5. Avoid Goitrogens

If you are trying to lose weight through diet, you have probably consumed numerous goitrogens. Goitrogens are substances found in various foods that suppress the thyroid function. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you look at it), many vegetables are goitrogens such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage, and collard greens. This is not a ploy to get you away from veggies, instead just remember to monitor your intake of these foods.

6. Sleep

Finally something we can at least enjoy! One very important aspect of weight loss is sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are not giving your body the opportunity to recuperate. Also, being sleepy throughout the day can cause you to reach for sweets and caffeine to combat the fatigue which can lead to weight gain.

If you want to slim down in 2016, try these tips! Also, if you know of any good tips, share them in the comment section below to help others!

Very good advice. However, I made all changes and have been doing so for many years now and have seen no changes. All research shows that unless the hormones and thyroid are corrected your body can’t make necessary changes. Oxidative stress causes to our bodies only complicates matters, often not taken seriously by our medical physicians. Please, forgive me if I offend anyone, but… this spring after being seen once again by drs. and other medical professionals stat basis being fearful for my life, it was recommended that I consider taking some products that have been highly regulated, researched and… Read more »
